FACE="Monotype Corsiva" >Sometimes I think we hear so much about having faith we fail to comprehend what that really means to us in our lives. We can understand the faith of the Pioneers, we read of the faith of Paul, who wrote masterful, uplifting and faithfilled letters to members of the church from a tiny prison cell....perhaps we can understand even the faith of a prophet and his brother, who were beaten, arrested and spent many nights away from thier beloved families to avoid further arrest and beatings. Those two men eventually gave thier lives because they refused to say "It's not true, the gospel doesn't exist." But they didn't say that, and today we have precious truths, precious preisthood and temple ordinances that bind us together eternally as a result of thier faith. What of that faith? What does it take to have that kind of faith?</FONT> <FONT SIZE="3" COLOR="#003399" FACE="Monotype Corsiva" >I know, I know....you're going to tell me we should read our scriptures, say our prayers (I call it the Seminary answer)....but there's more than that. And I'm pretty sure that you (yes you...the one reading this!) E. Robinson walked out of the South Carolina forest and first greeted the Indians of the Catawba tribe. Eventually, almost the whole tribe accepted the restored gospel. The Church was less successful with the Catawba’s white neighbors, however, and mobs rose up repeatedly to try to extinguish the work. The Catawbas defended the missionaries against these attacks, and the reservation became a safe refuge from which the gospel message could go forth. This small offshoot of Israel grew into an unshakable outpost of Zion. Kim Blue is a present-day member of the Catawba tribe, and she often draws inspiration from the example of her ancestors. Her great-grandfather, Chief Sam Blue, was famous as a man of integrity and spiritual power. Her grandfather, Leroy Blue, who lives next door, has told her many stories of that great man, and Kim is doing her best to follow in his footsteps. Kim serves as seminary president and secretary of the Laurel class in the Catawba Ward. Her father, Bishop Carson Taylor Blue says of her, “She’s a believer.” She also proves that being a faithful Latter-day Saint can be fun. She loves basketball and can often be found shooting at the hoop on her grandfather’s barn. Kim sings in her high school’s chorale ensemble and loves dancing and children. A senior in high school, she is planning a career as an X-ray technician because she wants to help others. It isn’t surprising that Chief Blue’s great-granddaughter has some deep feelings about faith. “Faith,” she says, “is a belief in something that is real but cannot be seen yet. First, we have to have faith in Jesus Christ. You also have to have faith in our Heavenly Father, seeing that we’re trying to be just like him. “We need faith every day of our lives. I have found that when I am praying about a problem I often receive an answer in a lesson or talk at church. “Of course, I have to do my part and live by the answer, because faith is really a matter of action too. If I say I have faith but don’t go to church or say my prayers or try to keep the commandments, I really don’t have much. Faith must be exercised if it is to grow.
