Cottonwood Lane
by Doug Walker and Sherry Marks Walker
From "Whatever It Takes"
Ilene lived in a little brick house
she and Stanley bought in 1952.
415 Cottonwood Lane was where they hoped
to make their dreams come true.
They were never blessed with kids,
but they shared a lot of happy years,
they grew old and Stanley passed away
and left her lonely on Cottonwood Lane.
A few years later some of my friends and I
heard about Ilene and thought it would be cool
if we all took a little time and went to her house
Mondays after school.
We talked about her life or anything that was on her mind,
Sang her songs and even prayed.
I think we left her smiling on Cottonwood Lane.
(Chorus)
I don't know who got more every time we walked through that door
But it was always hard to leave.
I'd think of the words, "If ye have done it to the least of these
Ye have done it unto me."
We were sad the day we heard that Ilene died
But happy she was with her Stanley again
We all finished school and moved on but I still think of her
Every now and then
Lately I've been thinking how
I need to get back to that place
where when you give you always gain
It's never too far from here, Cottonwood Lane
Take a little time and you will find Cottonwood Lane.
