Food Storage Goal Plan
Here is a simple plan to either get you started on a good Food Storage Plan, or help you build your existing storage.
1. Using the guidelines on the previous page, determine how much of each of the Basic Food Storage items you need. Click here to get a downloadable page for this. On this page you will then write in the amount of Food Storage you have, and then subtract that from the first number to get the amount you still need (it's all on that page).
2. Next, set small goals for each month. Either set a dollar amount goal, or a storage amount goal. Example 1: February we will set aside $40 for Food Storage (that's only $5 a week!). We will buy some wheat and some powdered milk. (In this area, that would mean 100 lbs. of wheat and 10 lbs of Powdered Milk) Example 2: February we will purchase half of our wheat and part of our oil. Click here for a downloadable page to record these goals on. Suggestion: Try to spread out your resources, so if at any given time you really need that food storage, it will be mostly functional and you won't be stuck trying to live on wheat and water!
We recommend you use this plan in addition to buying bulk and stocking up on sale items of things your family enjoys. If you do this, you will find your food storage growing quickly and you'll have a "well rounded" food storage! If you don't meet your goal for a month, start right in on the next month. Don't worry about catching up unless you truly can afford it.
The $5 a Week Plan
Here is a simple plan to give you an idea of how much you can store by simply alloting $5 a week. This is by no means a complete food storage, but it's a good start. Each week, set aside $5 in a jar for every two people you are storing food for (i.e. for a family of six, set aside $15). Purchase the listed items for each week. The list is food for two people, so you'll need to adjust amounts as needed. Any extra money left over put in the kitty for future weeks. Follow the plan faithfully, set the cash aside, and before you know it, you'll have a great food storage plan! There are two rules to remember: 1. DO NOT eat any of the food for your storage, unless it has been properly rotated and replaced. 2.DO NOT steal from the kitty...even if you need a quarter to call home! Remember, if you steal from the kitty, you starve!

The x 26 Plan
For example: One lady we know wrote out two weeks worth of menus, using her family's favorite meals. She then tabulated all the ingredients (non-perishable) for those two weeks. Then she multiplied that amount by 26- enough for one years supply. That was her target storage amount. If you have the available cash, you can march right out and buy your years supply of that target storage amount. If you don't, then you pick a few items each month to build a supply of, keeping in mind the loss-leader sales at the grocery store. This (obviously) takes a little time and planning, but it won't kill your budget or your savings account, and you'll be paying the best price possible for most items. ROTATION is still important!
The Bulk Buying Plan
This plan is similar to the one above, except you have no set menu. If you need the structure of a fixed menu, forget this plan, since you'll likely find yourself without something you need! But if you like to vary your menus, then this is probably the most common plan. Most people use this plan, and combine it with the basic plan. Keep in mind: in a crises, you won't be buying bakery items already made, so the basic plan amounts for grains still apply, even if you don't use that much right now! For this plan, you figure out what your family uses of different non-perishable items, and write down your target storage amounts of these items, then shop sales of clearances, or earmark your tax return, or whatever until you reach the goal. Once again the Record/Tally sheets will be important, because YOU STILL NEED TO ROTATE!
